Three-Step

Beginners start with the practice of three step sparring which involves the attacker stepping forward three times and performing a lunging punch each step. The defender retreats, blocking each attack and after the third attack will execute a counter attack. The defender then becomes the attacker and the sequence is reversed. This exercise allows students to practice correct execution of blocking technique, improves timing, improves the students ability to move within stance and allows the student to execute attacking techniques against a real target (although no contact is made).

One-Step

One step sparring for students involves the attacker executing a single attacking punch and the defender then either blocking or avoiding the attack and executing a counter attack or combination. The defence and counter attack that the student may perform is much more flexible as the defender is not forced to execute the three retreating steps and does not need to block. The emphasis within one step is on reaction speed and accuracy and also on the selection and use of the counter.

Two-Step

Two step sparring is similar to one step but in this case the attacker executes a front kick and then a punch or a punch and then a kick to which the defender responds. The addition of the kick and the random element brought about by the attackers choice of the order of attack makes this a more advanced form of practice than one step. The aims of the exercise are to improve the students ability to react spontaneously and also to defend against kicking.
